FIRST STAGE: week one

The Automatic Trash Bin

Year Two Group Project, University of Liverpool, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department.
The developments of this project were supervised by Dr. James Bradley
The Group members are
 Haoran Cheng, Xuhui Gong, Shekhah Mobarak, A-ro Han

Week One; 31 January 2020

First stage

For the first working week a meeting was held prior to the advisors meeting at Sydney jones library, a plan was set on what to do on the laboratory day to be able to save time and evade wasting time on the actual laboratory session. By this point the group roles have already been distributed amongst the group members, consequently by the end of the meeting it was concluded that Haoran and Xuhui are to mainly focus on developing the software and ensuring that it is adaptable to the Raspberry Pi 4, Shekhah was tasked with creating a suitable design for the Trash bin and create a demo before the construction of the actual trash bin, the demo is to be constructed out of recycled cardboard boxes.

Afterwards a meeting was held with the Supervisor to discuss the progress of the group and what the next step is in order to successfully achieve the required results.

There was a concern that was to be addressed during this week which is about the following point; the model that was agreed upon previously has to be modified into a more suitable design to which the trash bin would be able to reach its full potential. Hence, the hardware team is expected to create demo designs out of cardboard and try to test them to indicate what type of design is suitable for the trash bin.

The tasks assigned for this week were;
-       Create an alternative design for the trash bin
-       Construct the design out of cardboard
-       Develop the software

The tasks set for the following week were;
-       To start constructing the trash bin out of a suitable durable material
-       Start combining the software and hardware
-       Check if the initial design is operational

 Laboratory session

At the beginning of the laboratory session the group checked if all of the components ordered have arrived.

Afterwards the group decided to divide the bench into software area and hardware area to ensure that all of the team would focus on completing their part efficiently and in an organized manner.

Th preliminary code was then tested by the software team to check if it operational, after checking the code the Raspberry Pi 4 was connected to the circuit chip by utilized electronic jumpers as shown below in figure 8.

Next the micro servo motor was connected to the circuit.

In addition, a camera and motion sensors were connected and adjusted along with the other components in the circuit. After connecting all components mentioned previously they were all tested with the code. The code was operating as expected.

As for the hardware a mini structure was created by using recycled cardboard boxes. Based on several alterations to the design the group agreed to go with a simple design that would meet all of the features required for the automatic trash bin. the group had agreed that the trash bin had to be rectangular and separated both vertically and horizontally. For instance, for the interior section is divided into three horizontal levels, the first level is where the user is to throw in the trash, the next level is where the machine is to separate the trash, and finally the final level is where the trash is to descend. In addition, the final part is divided into four separate sections for an illustration please see figure 11 below.
